Most Australians are concerned about the impacts of disposable plastics waste on our environment and waste streams.

The Cook Labor Government continues its commitment to make WA cleaner with the ban on moulded expanded plastic packaging as part of Stage 2 of its Plan for Plastics.

The new regulations mean products with moulded packaging made from expanded plastics, such as expanded polystyrene or that are cut to shape, can no longer be sold or supplied by businesses, manufacturers, retailers or distributors in WA.

Comments attributed to the Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourne:

"WA is a leader in tackling single-use plastics, and this latest ban is another win for our environment and the community. Foamed plastics break into tiny pieces that are harmful to wildlife an ddifficult to clean up. By removing them from circulation, we're protecting our natural spaces and encouraging smarter, more sustainable packaging choices."

This achievement builds on the introduction of a lightweight plastic bag ban in 2018 and the container deposit scheme in 2020.

We are also phasing out single-use plastic items including straw and utensils, cups and cup lids, foodware and helium balloons releases.
